Brushing Too Hard
Many people believe brushing harder will clean teeth better, but this is not true. Excess pressure can wear away the enamel (the protective outer layer of teeth) and injure the gums. Over time, this may lead to gum recession, tooth sensitivity, and even notches near the neck of the tooth.
Always use gentle pressure — brushing should massage, not scrub.
Using a Hard-Bristle Toothbrush
Hard bristles can be harsh on both teeth and gums. Continuous use may cause gum recession, sensitivity, and enamel abrasion.
A soft or ultra-soft toothbrush is recommended by dentists as it cleans effectively without causing damage.
Brushing for Less than 2 Minutes
Most people brush for only 30–40 seconds, which is not enough to clean all tooth surfaces. Rushing leaves plaque behind, especially in the back teeth and along the gum line.
Brush for at least 2 minutes, covering all areas — outer, inner, and chewing surfaces.
Not Brushing Before Bed
Night brushing is the most important brushing of the day. During sleep, saliva flow reduces, allowing bacteria to multiply faster. If teeth are not cleaned before bed, bacteria feed on leftover food and increase the risk of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.
Never skip brushing before sleeping.
Skipping the Gum Line
Plaque and bacteria accumulate most at the junction where teeth meet gums. Many people avoid this area thinking it may cause bleeding — but ignoring it actually worsens gum problems.
Use gentle circular motions along the gum line to keep gums healthy and prevent gingivitis.
Brushing Technique
- Position your brush: Hold at a 45-degree angle to your gums.
- Circular motions: Gently brush in small circles on all surfaces.
- Front, back, and top: Don’t forget the biting surfaces and inner sides.
- Gum line focus: Be gentle but thorough where teeth meet gums.
- Tongue and roof: Give ’em a quick brush to freshen breath
Dentist’s Reminder
You don’t need to brush harder — you need to brush smarter.
Correct technique + consistency = healthy teeth for life.
