FLUORIDE FOR DENTAL HEALTH

Fluoride is a mineral that has been found to prevent decay in children and adults. One can get fluoride from using fluoride *toothpaste or mouthwash *Drinking tap water that has fluoride in it
*fluoride application by Dentist in office .

In Office fluoride application is indicated not only to children but also to adults with certain medical conditions or those at high risk of cavities .
INDICATIONS
1. High caries risk : patients with a high risk of tooth decay such as those with the history of cavities and poor oral hygiene .
2. Nursing bottle caries : early childhood caries can be prevented with fluoride application.
3. ⁠Orthodontic treatment : fluoride application should be done around the brackets to prevent tooth decay in patients who do not maintain good hygiene
4. ⁠fluoride can be applied around the restorations to prevent secondary caries in a caries prone mouth.
5. ⁠Fluoride application can be done to treat sensitivity.
It can be provided by toothpaste, mouthwash and Dentist can apply more concentrated form of fluoride as varnish or gels for immediate and longer lasting relief .
6. Patients with dry mouth :It prevents tooth decay in patients with dry mouth.
7. Patients with special needs: It can be very beneficial to patients with special needs such as down syndrome or autism..

METHODS :
A : In the dental office : the dentist applies fluoride varnish or gel directly to the teeth. It is completely a painless procedure .
APPLICATION :
1. Fluoride varnish . It is applied to the teeth using a small brush. 2. fluoride gel. It may be applied to the teeth using a tray or a brush . It usually takes minutes to apply it.

Post treatment instructions:
The patient is advised not to eat or drink for 30 minutes to one hour. Good toothbrushing habits should be maintained.

Frequency, it should be recommended every 3 to 6 months, depending upon the needs of the patient .

B. Fluoride toothpaste :using fluoride toothpaste with right amount of fluoride according to the patients age .
C.Fluoride supplements are usually recommended by Dentist, especially for children in areas with low fluoride levels in the drinking water to prevent tooth decay.
